THE QURA’N, SCIENCE & SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY

 Pro. Ahmed M. Behi

INTRODUCTION

I conceived writing about the miracles of the Qura'nic revelations while I was in Denver in 1987 before Rushdie's blasphemous book, the Satanic Verses, was published. I had many trials during the writing of the book. For a while, besetting family problems set my mind wandering with complete lack of concentration. The biggest setback, which almost extinguished my enthusiasm for completing the manuscript, occurred when my personal possessions including my personal computer containing the manuscript and all backup diskettes were stolen at the Harare airport in early 1991. This event severely saddened me and for a while I lost the driving force and the energy to complete the manuscript.  God in His power gave me strength to write the manuscript all over again from memory. This proved to be not an easy task.

The subject matter covered in this booklet are numerous but not exhaustive. My primary purpose is to demonstrate to the Muslim and
non-Muslim communities the variety of subjects ranging from social and behavioral sciences to complex topics in biological, astro-physical and geological sciences that the Qur'an presents with great accuracy. I have not discussed any subject matter that the Qur'an covers with the detail it deserves. The Qur'an is written in a lucid simple language that is easy to understand. In most cases the Ayahs clearly elucidate the subject matter, which they deal with, that further explanations become unnecessary. The reader will find that certain Ayahs have been repeated for later discussions under different interpretational context.
My subsidiary purpose of writing this booklet is to present, particularly to the non-Arabic readers, some glimpses of the wealth of information that the Qura'n contains. My intention is also to inspire Islamic leaders, scholars and scientists to take keen interest in Qur'anic studies and research. I hope non-Moslem-readers will get some insight into the real meaning of Islam. I, further, hope that Islam will be judged by its own merits, true teachings and culture.
Although Islam has built great civilizations, advanced science, introduced magnificent architectural designs and had rich cultural heritage, the West poorly understands the impact on Islam had on shaping the course of civilized society. In its glory days Islam introduced mathematics, particularly algebra, advanced the frontiers of astronomy and devised a legal system that was later applied and developed by the West. Islam built a culture based on moral values and the maintenance of peace.
The interpretation of the Qur’an by earlier Islamic scholars was incompatible with the modern Islamic views prevailing in this century. Dedicated researchers must reinterpret the Qur’an and herald its teachings into the 21st century thinking. In depth research is needed to study the true message of the Qura’n and dispel the hostile attitude embedded by early over zealous
